Keep up with removing junk (mushrooms, stumps, trees, rocks, etc.) from around your base. If you have less than 40, one will appear every 8 hours. Removing them is an achievement that earns you gems. Each one you remove will give you 0-3 gems. If you have more than 40 pieces of junk around your base, no more will spawn, which means you're losing out on potential gems you could be getting.
This is a free way to earn 0-3 gems three times a day, or 0-9 a day. Odds are you won't get 0, or 9, but let's be conservative and say you'll get 4 a day this way. That's nothing to scoff at:
~30 a week (28),
~120 a month and
~1500 (!) a year (1,460).
